In the city of Santiago-Chile, from November 27 to 29, 2019, the International Seminar “Energy Poverty: Adaptation and Mitigation in the Latin American Energy Transition” took place, a conference organized by the Energy Poverty Network of the University of Chile and the Energy Sustainability Agency of the country.
Space where they discussed the topic of promoting discussion about a dimension of inequality and energy poverty, whose mitigation involves addressing the need to provide universal and affordable access for the entire population, in line with the objectives set by goal 7 (energy affordable and non-polluting) of the Sustainable Development Goals under the 2030 agenda of the United Nations.
In relation to this discussion, the Director of Studies, Projects and Information of The Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization (OLACDE), Andrés Schuschny, presented the content of the recent publication of authorship of the Organization “Energy Poverty in Latin America and the Caribbean”, a proposal of indicators that measure access to energy, with a focus on social and gender inequality (http://bit.ly/PobrEner).
“While the discussion of energy poverty has focused on access to electricity, it is necessary to consider the complexity of the issue and address other energy needs relevant to homes such as heating, access to hot water and clean cooking technologies , the quality of the energy supply, the equity in energy expenditure, among other aspects, ”said OLACDE Director of Studies, Projects and Information, Andrés Schuschny.
Experts from Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay and Peru also participated in this event, which was attended by the Minister of Energy of Chile, Juan Carlos Jobet.
This activity marks a milestone by officially forming the Ibero-American Network for Overcoming Energy Poverty (IANOEP).
