On Thursday, September 5, 2019, in Quito, the host city of The Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization (OLACDE), the official launch of the Project for the Implementation of the National Energy Information System for Ecuador – sieEcuador for the Ministry of Energy and Non-Renewable Natural Resources was carried out. This project that has the technical support of The Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization (OLACDE) and the financial contribution of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). Said activity is part of the Program for Strengthening the Management and Dissemination of Energy Information for Sustainable Development in Latin America and the Caribbean.
OLACDE has been working on tools to systematize energy information, with the aim of developing an increasingly powerful sector. And on this occasion Ecuador will begin a process of energy efficiency improvement “fundamental to develop public policies that benefit citizens”, as announced by OLACDE Executive Secretary, Alfonso Blanco, during the opening of the event.
The Executive Secretary of OLACDE added that work is being done on several joint issues in support of the Government of Ecuador in energy issues.
“Having modern tools that systematize all that is the collection of information, is what we want through this Energy Information System for Ecuador, which is the basis for these information flows to be processed in the most efficient way possible” added the Executive Secretary of OLACDE.
Additionally, he informed that another effect generated by this tool is to make the countries’ human resources more effective in the assembly of the processing of energy information.
OLACDE is working on the improvement of information systems in the region, and in this process the IDB has been a fundamental strategic partnership, because it has become a joint initiative to visualize what information systems represent in the energy field for the region.
OLACDE’s Executive Secretary said that the Organization is mandated to build the consolidation of all energy balances in Latin America and the Caribbean and to capture this information, 3 principles must be met: reliability, transparency and providing this information in time and form.
On behalf of the Ecuadorian government, the Vice Minister of Electricity of the Ministry of Energy and Non-Renewable Natural Resources, Iván Rodríguez, mentioned that the establishment of synergies between the public – private sectors and international organizations, allows progress in the development and consolidation of a better energy sector.
Kenol Thys, IDB Senior Energy Specialist in Ecuador said: “We observe the entry of Ecuador through the big door into the reliable, compatible and homogeneous Energy Information System so that only one language is spoken in the region regarding energy.”
Facts about sieEcuador
This tool will strengthen the administration, storage and processing capacities of the statistical, legal and documentary information of the energy sector available to the country. The statistical information will be structured with common definitions, methodologies and units that will allow its comparability at national and regional level.
The Information System (sieEcuador) will be a dynamic platform that will allow storing and systematizing the country’s energy information; guaranteeing the supply and quality of the data to be published in the long term. Supporting the analysis of the different activities of the energy chain, which will facilitate the knowledge management and energy planning of Ecuador.
The Program for Strengthening the Management and Dissemination of Energy Information for Sustainable Development in Latin America and the Caribbean, carried out by OLACDE and the IDB, aims to strengthen capacities in the management, dissemination and delivery of energy information in Latin America and the Caribbean.
