UNEF and OLACDE sign agreement to encourage best practices exchange between Spain and LATAM

  • The agreement aims to jointly promote energy transition between Spain and LATAM, encouraging the training new professionals to promote a greater implementation of solar energy internationally.
  • The main lines of work include the creation of cooperation and innovation projects, fostering research programs and carrying out activities to disseminate and exchange experiences.
  • UNEF considers that these agreements are essential to improve the training of professionals and the retention of talent in order to make progress in achieving the energy transition.
The Spanish Photovoltaic Union (UNEF) and The Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization (OLACDE) have signed today a strategic agreement with the aim of promoting the energy transition between Spain and LATAM, encouraging the training of new professionals that promote a greater implementation of solar energy internationally. This agreement opens a new paradigm of collaboration at the international level for the exchange of information and knowledge, including the implementation of academic activities to address one of the main challenges facing the solar energy sector, the recruitment and retention of sufficient talent to accelerate the completion of the energy transition. “We at UNEF believe that this step is fundamental for the promotion of photovoltaic technology in Spain and Latin America through the development and implementation of cooperation and innovation projects or through research programs and activities for the dissemination and exchange of experiences,” said Rafael Benjumea, president of UNEF. Benjumea also pointed out that the solar energy sector generated 89,644 direct and indirect jobs in Spain in 2021: ” In order to achieve the implementation of solar energy necessary to accomplish the energy transition in Spain, the need for professionals is going to multiply. Support between institutions is essential to enable us to address the academic and training needs of the sector to generate manpower and retain the best talent.” OLACDE´s Executive Secretary Alfonso Blanco, noted that “the collaboration between OLACDE and UNEF will serve to support the achievement of deeper energy transitions in the region, which has a vast and untapped renewable energy potential.”   With this signature, both institutions have highlighted the need to work together on actions that enable the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals, SDG7: “Ensure access to affordable, safe, sustainable and modern energy” and SDG5: “Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls” in both continents. Main lines of action of the agreement -Cooperation for the proposal, design and implementation of projects in the field of photovoltaics and innovation. -Cooperation for the design, structuring and development of research programs, training and other related academic activities. -Joint execution and exchange of studies, publications and research; -Cooperation for the organization of seminars, workshops, events and other activities of mutual interest in the framework of technology dissemination and promotion; -Cooperation for the organization of seminars, workshops, events and other activities of mutual interest in the framework of technology diffusion and promotion -Creation of scholarships and programs to improve the training of solar energy professionals in Spain and LATAM. About UNEF The Spanish Photovoltaic Union (UNEF) is the industry association for solar photovoltaic energy in Spain. Made up of more than 770 companies, entities and groups from the entire technology value chain, it represents more than 90% of the sector’s activity in Spain and brings together practically all of them: producers, installers, engineers, manufacturers of raw materials, modules and components, distributors and consultants. UNEF also holds the presidency and co-secretariat of FOTOPLAT, the Spanish photovoltaic technology platform. The platform brings together universities, research centers and leading companies in photovoltaic R&D in Spain. About OLACDE The Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization (OLACDE) is a public intergovernmental organization for cooperation, coordination and technical advice, established on November 2, 1973 through the signing of the Lima Agreement, ratified by 27 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the fundamental objective of promoting the integration, conservation, rational use, marketing and defense of energy resources in the region. UNEF and OLACDE sign agreement to encourage best practices exchange between Spain and LATAM

Newsletter summary

The agreement aims to jointly promote energy transition between Spain and LATAM, encouraging the training new professionals to promote a greater implementation of solar energy internationally.

Knowledge and Training

We promote advanced technical training programs that facilitate the exchange of experiences, as well as the development of the human and institutional capacities needed to support the energy transformations in our region.

Our academic offering includes executive programs, postgraduate diplomas, master’s degrees, and innovative initiatives focused on topics such as energy transition, conventional energy, renewable energy, e-mobility, and regional integration.

OLACDE creates a regional network focused on energy knowledge that connects governments, young professionals, academics, and sector experts to drive collaborative solutions through technical cooperation and talent development to address future energy and climate challenges.

Technical cooperation and financing

We strengthen South-South and triangular cooperation ties as drivers to accelerate energy transitions in Latin America and the Caribbean. OLACDE brings together efforts among governments, multilateral organizations, academic institutions, and the private sector to mobilize financing, technical capacities, and innovative solutions tailored to our regional reality.

We promote strategic initiatives aimed at directing resources toward projects focused on decarbonization, conventional energy, renewable energy, and energy justice, with the objective of establishing a more efficient, inclusive, and sustainable regional cooperation architecture.

Regional Energy Community

We are building a regional energy community with a global outlook that seeks to position Latin America and the Caribbean as a key player on the international stage. OLACDE strengthens its representation in major multilateral forums related to energy, trade, and climate by fostering strategic alliances and promoting international cooperation.

Through events such as Energy Week, together with new spaces for international dialogue, we promote a collective voice that helps attract financial investment and create new opportunities for sustainable development across our region.

Energy Transition and Strategic Projects

We drive an energy transition based on principles of sustainability, energy security, and social inclusion. OLACDE supports countries in adopting new technologies related to energy efficiency, energy storage, green hydrogen, electromobility, and grid digitalization to accelerate the sector’s decarbonization process.

Our approach also includes promoting strategic projects that strengthen energy resilience at the regional level, contributing to emission reductions while consolidating a cleaner and more competitive energy infrastructure. Initiatives such as OEMLAC position our region as a leading reference in climate innovation and sustainable energy transition.

Energy information and data

We develop regional platforms dedicated to energy information, technical analysis, and strategic data systems that strengthen both public and private decision-making in the sector. OLACDE promotes the digital transformation of the sector through the use of artificial intelligence, georeferencing, and advanced tools for regional energy analysis.

The integration of systems such as SieLAC, together with new regional platforms, allows for the consolidation of reliable and up-to-date technical information, facilitating modern, interoperable, and evidence-based energy planning.

Regional Energy Integration

We promote cooperation in the regional energy sector, focused on collaboration, infrastructure development, and regulatory harmonization, with the objective of strengthening energy security in Latin America and the Caribbean. OLACDE coordinates projects related to electrical interconnection, gas integration, and regional energy planning, seeking to create efficient and sustainable partnerships.

Through cooperation with the governments of our 27 member countries, regional blocs, multilateral institutions, and both public and private stakeholders, we drive strategic initiatives that promote regulatory harmonization and new energy exchange mechanisms, in order to enhance national capacities and accelerate an integrated energy transition at the regional level.
